“Business?” repeated Suoh in a teasing manner, “Hardly…I come and go as I please…though it would be a tad helpful if you knew any place were I could get a cheap meal…” she said placing her hands on her hips.

Afraid of the Dark

[“Sannan-san? Do you do this often?”]
“Not often, no.” He said as he focused upon making the onigiri a relatively edible shape. He patted the rice within his hands further, finally and successfully creating the shape he was pleased with.
“I must confess that it has been a while since I’ve made onigiri with these hands.”
[“What do you do, Sannan-san?”]

Sannan uncharacteristically froze for a moment. What to say… He certainly wanted to avoid startling the little fellow.
“I write quite a bit… But I’m a law enforcer, so to a certain extent I suppose it is expected of me.” He replied.”I mostly write… reports.”
Lightly put. He thought. At most a white lie… Nothing more.
It wasn’t a total lie, after all.
Heisuke happily listened to Sannan, grabbing at the rice ball once he was finished. He happily munched on the ball of rice, stomach satisfied to have any sort of food inside it. One rice ball wasn’t going to be enough, but it was a start.
Heisuke groaned when Sannan described his job. He wanted to know more about that stuff on his desk! It was red and weird and looked cool, almost like special water. Writing reports was definitely not the answer he wanted.

“What about all that glass and red stuff on your desk? That looked cool, I wanna know about that stuff.”
He did have to admit though, the law enforcer part did sound cool. Everyone here seemed to carry very large swords, so maybe that water stuff was part of it. He finished his rice ball, grasping for another one as he talked.

“Is it part of the law enforcement? You guys must be super important to get to carry all those swords around…”

Kids seemed far more inquisitive than he remembered.
“It’s a small research assignment, Todou-kun. I was put in charge of studying it…” He said quickly deflecting anymore questions about the Ochimizu, “And our swords… We must be very careful with them. They may look very amazing and flashy, but they are more than that. Taking lives bears a heavy weight on the soul, and forgetting that is a dangerous thing.”
He wasn’t about to tell the child that he owned a pair.
“I suppose we are very important, Todou-kun.” He said, patting the child’s head.

Of Tigers and Demons

He picked up his pace, turning down the street, reversing his method back to head quarters.
Having reprimanded some of the other men for bringing back small injured animals and being lenient in their kind causes, he felt the twinge of ironically placed guilt.
He hoped that he had some old cloth he could spare for the tiger’s sake.
The tiger cub looked up and him, as if to ask him a question.
He returned it’s attention to him, almost equally as perplexed.
“It’s not too far off now,” he said, unknowingly answering the question it was seeking an answer for.
He passed through the entrance continued to the patio and hoped that he wouldn’t be caught with the animal in his arms. Last thing he felt like hearing was “Told you so” or “Ooooooooi, Sannan-san! Breaking your own rule, huh?”
So far, everything was working in his favour as he continued swiftly down the hall to his room, his breathing getting a little irregular from the psychological tension he was inflicting on himself.
“Sannan-san!”
He was almost there.

Shit.
“Yeeeees..?” he replied, turning his head to look over his shoulder.
“You’re back early. Where is the rest of your unit?”
“Still on patrol, I’m afraid. I had to return for urgent business, which had just arisen while I was on duty.”
All of this was the truth. Just glazed over with a sugar coating.
“They never let you rest, huh, Sannan-san?”
Sannan chuckled.
“I’m afraid that lack of rest comes hand in hand with a higher status, my friend.”
The man laughed.
“I’ll leave you to your work Sannan-san. It’s nice to see you about though!”
There was something wistful about his smile to that comment.
“I’ll try not to coop around my desk too much.” he replied.
He waited until he saw the man retreat up the hallway before he turned and ducked into his room. He set out his futon, and took off one of his vests and set it down atop the futon, before laying the tiger on it.
“Let’s see if I can do something for that paw of yours…”
He was surprised, the cub’s fur was in perfect shape, no ticks or fleas. Other than being nervous or scared it had an amazingly tame temperament… he continued to inspect its body, flipping it over gently onto its back.
Female, he noted. From the lack of external genitalia, he didn’t need to touch her to know.
A pet perhaps?
If so, she was very well groomed and looked after. That would really be the only conclusion. There were no records of licenses for exotic animals that he had in his possession, but he wasn’t going to let this go; especially if it could be a whole operation involving tigers of any age.
It would be more than a sick joke if someone had imported the animals alive for testing… and he didn’t want to think about the implications of using ochimizu on a wild animal.
He hoped, whatever her reason for being in such proximity to humans, that it wasn’t for anything more sinister then ‘exotic’ pet ownership. And if that was the explanation, then a wealthy owner would be looking for her.
When finally she was brought into the headquarters and set down on a futon, she simply laid there and let the man roll her around and inspect her fur for any other injuries. Really, there was no point in her trying to escape now. Without his arms loosely wrapping themselves around her body, she wouldn’t stay in her tiger form for long now.

While the bespectacled man was busy contemplating how such a well-groomed and tame tiger cub had made it into the capitol, Kisa could already could tell that things were just about to get very awkward and very confusing. Her small tiger body soon became engulfed in a gray smoke, and in place of the tiger cub was a young girl of only twelve, with orange hair and bright red cheeks. Her arms were wrapped tightly around her exposed body, more for hiding herself than for protection.

“…”
This was going to be hard to explain…He rummaged through the clothes in his closet looking for things he could use to bind her paw. It was moments like this that he chastised himself for being far too orderly.
hm… This… I’ve had this for a while.. I believe it is far too small across the shoulders now… I could use this.
He turned around.
“This should make you good as-”

“-New…”
The worn gi dropped from his hands. Perhaps he’d have to go to the medical facilities after all. But that wasn’t the problem. There was a girl in the place of the tiger cub.
He quickly picked it up and handed her the gi before sharply turning around.

“My sincerest apologies. I-… Please put this on."
This was going to be very difficult to explain. Very.
His brow began to furrow. At the least, he was going to have to lie about what she’d done to be here to the others, if they saw her. Or he’d have to sneak her out the way she came in.
Facing his closet, he found an obi she could tie the gi closed with and held it out awkwardly, without turning.
First he’d help her out. But explanations on this situation were needed… And he was more than determined to get them.
-
He’d yet to settle down into a more normal pace of things but being away for so long from head quarters… he had much to catch up on.

“Oh? I don’t believe we’ve met before. My name is Sannan Keisuke. Please tell me if there is anything I can do to help you.”

“Of course. Not to far from here to your right, on 1-choume, there is an inn… And beside that there are a few restaurants and street vendors. You should be able to find something to your liking there.” Sannan replied. He crossed his arms and tilted his head slightly to one side.
“If that is all, then I do hope that will be of use to you.”
“Hmmm….” hummed Suoh boredly, “I honestly thought I could kill some boredom….” she muttered under her breath. Slowly she straightened her posture, placing one hand on her hip, “You have nothing else to do today do you? Sannan-san?” she asked in a rather polite manner.

“Although I do have to return shortly, I’m not busy at the moment, no.” He said finally.
“Are you in need of a companion?”
“Of course, these times are dangerous for a woman like myself to be walking the streets alone.” Stated Suoh with a hint of sarcasm, “Its hard to find good company these days.” She said flashing a smile.

He chuckled in return.
“Such flattery, Suoh-chan. I’m lucky you hold me in such esteem. A young lady such as yourself does not nearly seem to be as defenseless, but nonetheless I’m honored to accompany you.” he said with a smile to match. “Where are we heading, Suoh-chan? 1-choume?”
“You’re funny Sannan-san.” she teased, “But yes! We’re going to 1-choume.” she said giddily, “I’m pretty hungry…I donno about you but I think a meal is better when there is company.” she smiled.

“Very well then.” he replied with a tip of his head. He began to walk.
“I suppose you’re right,” he agreed finally.
“Come! Come!” she said trying to hurry Sannan to walk faster. Her sudden change in personality resembling one of an excited child. She tugged at Sanna’s sleeve slightly before weaving her way skillfully through the crowd.
She glanced around tempted to take the coin bags of the people around her. Her hand twitched a bit, not too sure if she had enough money on her to even buy food. A frown crossed her lips for a moment, as she (somewhat) painfully watched as potential victims walk by her with their coin bags on display.

Sannan observed her excitement, but was a little surprised when she took his sleeve and proceeded to pull him through the crowd.
He sped up slightly, allowing his sleeve to slack as he followed in her footsteps.
She stopped and he looked around. the smells, the sight, and the noise brought a bit of a smile to his face. He looked around for something that interested him before looking at Suoh.
She seemed to be fixated on something… distracted.
“Is there something wrong, Suoh-chan?”
Suoh blinked , drawing her attention away from the people and back to Sannan. She flashed a quirky smile his way, “Hmm? Nothing.” she said rather quickly before continuing through the crowd. Her stomach began to complain as they past some stalls that were selling some food.
She tilted her head to the side debating whether to just buy some yakitori, “Would you like some Yakitori Sannan-san????” she asked pointing at one of the stalls.
“That sounds like a great start Suoh-chan.” he agreed.
He made his way to the stall she pointed at. The vendor was fanning down the grilling meat, turning them ever so often.
“How much can you eat Suoh-chan?”
She hesitated for a moment, “Oh, ummm….hmmm….” she paused for a moment before continuing,”I would be lying if I said I wasn’t hungry.” she laughed, “I can pay for myself, Sannan-san. I’m sure the Shinsengumi gives you a small amount to spend on a daily basis…I’m only assuming of course.” she said watching the vendor turn the meat on the grill.
Gaahhhhh….she whined inwardly, I may need a better profession…she thought irritably. She straightened her posture before looking back at Sannan, “I can pay if you’d like.” she said with a tilt of her head.
“That is an awfully kind gesture, Suoh-chan but I can pay for myself. I wouldn’t want to burden you, despite your offer.”
He may be her company, but he had no intention of being spoiled by her as well.
“Hm.. I’ll take three.”
The vendor nodded and put three Yakitori on a paper and handed to him, which he exchanged for money. His stomach felt impatient.

“None taken. 17 Is young for my skill set.” She said and sipped on her tea.

“See.. when I was younger I was in charge of my siblings while my parents were out running errands. Long story short, Robbers broke in and killed one of them every 10 minutes if I didn’t bring them something they thought was valuable. The police didn’t arrive til 30 minutes later. I was the only one left. I failed at protecting them. So I learned some self defense moves and combat moves. Eventually I decided I wanted to learn how to use a gun, but I got rid of it when I decided I needed to move away.”

“I see. That must have been very difficult for you… I’m sorry for your loss.”
It was a shame that she had to experience that…and at such a young age…
He remembered the warmth of the cup in his hands and took a sip.
“So what are you doing now, then? Are you employed or furthering your education perhaps?”
“Thank you, It’s made me stronger. I guess that’s why I’m so independent. I didn’t do very well after it all happened I’m actually only recently finding a new light.” She said with a sad voice.

“I graduated early already. I don’t know that I really want to go to college, I will eventually but I have a few years before I really have to.” She started out. “I don’t have a job either, I need one soon or I’ll be out and moving again.”

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Of course, only if you didn’t succumb to your short comings.
“That is commendable. Your spirit and will must be very formidable, indeed.” He said with another nod of his head.
He drank more of his tea, and listened as she talked.
“I see.”

“I’m afraid I don’t have one anymore. I used to have a silver Beretta 92 pistol. I never do damage to people though, I don’t like to.” She said to him and then sipped her tea.

She didn’t want him thinking she was some vicious killer. “If I go up against someone it’s usually in close combat, for self defense.” She added the self defense part to try to relief him of any doubts he might have about her now.
Pistol…

“Of course,” he said with a smile. “Defense can be the best offense when used well.”
He drank more tea. She looked young for someone who needed self defense. Perhaps Tokyo was a dangerous place. So dangerous one need a gun… a pistol as she referred to it.
“You look very young for your skill set,” he commented finally “no offense.”
